Variety is reporting that Indie Sales has picked up the international rights for “Close Protection” – previously titled “Maryland“. The movie is currently in production in France. The first production still was released and we have added it in our gallery.
Indie Sales has picked up international sales rights to Alice Winocour’s “Close Protection,” a French Riviera-set thriller toplining Matthias Schoenaerts (“Rust and Bone,” “The Drop”) and Diane Kruger.
Pic marks Winocour’s follow-up to “Augustine,” which unspooled in Cannes Critics Week in 2012 as well as Toronto.
Penned by Winocour and lensed by cinematographer George Lechaptois, “Close Protection” stars Schoenaerts as Vincent, a French Special Forces soldier just back from Afghanistan who is suffering from a post-traumatic stress disorder. He gets hired to ensure security at the luxury villa of a Lebanese businessman, his wife (Diane Kruger) and son on the French Riviera.
“The quality of the script and the great talent of Alice Winocour, not to mention the incredible casting, are making me very confident on the international film’s potential,” said Nicolas Eschbach, founder and president of Indie Sales, which will start shopping the movie at AFM.
“Close Protection” will be completed in the spring. Steohane Celerier’s Mars Distribution will release the movie in France.
At AFM, Indie Sales is also selling Stefano Sollima’s “Suburra.”
“Close Protection” is expected to be released in 2015.
Variety is reporting that Matthias upcoming movie will be part of Studiocanal’s AFM lineup to find distributors.
Max Joseph’s “We Are Your Friends,” with Zac Eron, about an aspiring Hollywood DJ, Luca Guadagnino’s psychological thriller “A Bigger Splash,” with Ralph Fiennes, Tilda Swinton, Matthias Schoenaerts and Dakota Johnson, Brian Hegland’s Tom Hardy gangster thriller “Legend” and Stephen Frears’ still-untitled Lance Armstrong movie, with Ben Foster as the cyclist, are all in post-production.
“A Bigger Splash” also hit the Toronto Film Festival market in September and Variety reported the following plot:
Meanwhile, “Fifty Shades of Grey” star Dakota Johnson has joined the cast of “A Bigger Splash,” an edgy and contempo twist on the cult Alain Delon-Romy Schneider starrer “La Piscine.” Johnson will play opposite Tilda Swinton, Ralph Fiennes and Matthias Schoenaerts.
“Splash” centers on a glamorous couple whose holiday in Southern Italy takes an unexpected turn with the visit from an old friend and his luscious daughter.

The movie will be released on January 23, 2015 in UK cinemas and it’s not been announced when it will be released in the US.
