March 9th, 2015   Reviews, Suite Française No Comments

With the U.K. release being set on Friday (March 13) the first reviews are getting released for Matthias upcoming movie “Suite Française“. Matthias stars alongside Michelle Williams in the Irène Némirovsky adaptation. We will round-up the reviews in this post. The movie is getting good reviews so far:

“The leads play things ingenuously straight, summoning genuine heat in the characters’ fleeting moments of physical interlocking. Williams, among the most intelligently intuitive actresses of her generation, imbues Lucile with a fragile, thoughtful reserve that never comes off as wan. She’s ideally matched by rising Belgian star Schoenaerts, who continues to demonstrate his versatility with each of his English-language assignments: He’s as dashingly refined here as he was viscerally brooding in his breakout roles in “Rust and Bone” and “Bullhead.” Channeling something of the young Fredric March in his graceful demeanor and delivery, he maps out Bruno’s internal conflicts with poignant economy.”

Schoenaerts has been called the Belgian Brando – and the roll of his eyes and his snort of dismissal when you mention it warns you not to get him started on that. But you can see why. The physical presence, the simmering intensity, the spooling thought processes…

Madame Sabine De Barra (Kate Winslet) is an unlikely candidate for landscape architect of the still‐to-be-completed Palace of Versailles. She has little time for the classical, ordered designs of the man who hires her, the famous architect Le Nôtre (Matthias Schoenaerts). However, as she works on her creation, she finds herself drawn to the enigmatic Le Nôtre and forced to negotiate the perilous rivalries and intricate etiquette of the court of King Louis XIV (Alan Rickman). But Sabine is made of strong stuff; her honesty and compassion help her to overcome both the challenges of her newfound popularity, and an unspeakable tragedy from her past, to win the favour of the Sun King and the heart of Le Nôtre.
